A Cornish string orchestra has made a successful sojourn to France in association with the Truro Morlaix Twinning Association.
Earlier this month the St Mewan Sinfonia, conducted by David Frost, travelled by ferry to Roscoff where they were met by members of the French TMTA. The musicians were promptly whisked to the beautiful town of Morlaix where they were shown the sites by their friendly Breton hosts.
After a sumptuous outdoor picnic, at which several Sinfonia members tried their hands at making traditional French crepes, the orchestra performed a well-attended concert in Morlaix’s Church of St Melanie.
Proving the language of music is indeed universal, the following day the St Mewan Sinfonia joined bows with the French L’Orchestre de Patio to perform a wonderful concert in Carantec. The successful visit was then rounded off with a three-course meal for the musicians and their generous hosts, washed down with plenty of the local vin.
A spokesman for the St Mewan Sinfonia said: “We were overwhelmed by the kindness of our Morlaix hosts who looked after us so well during our two-day trip. Not only did they lavish us with masses of delicious food, but they also took the time to teach us about the area’s history and culture.
“We hope that the friendships forged this year between the Sinfonia and the musicians of Morlaix will be built upon in years to come.”
The Sinfonia’s trip to Morlaix followed a visit to Truro made by members of L’Orchestre de Patio in April this year, which was also supported by the TMTA. The musicians on both sides of the Channel hope to repeat the musical exchange next year, with a view to making it an annual occurrence.
The orchestra spends its summer season giving concerts to help raise funds for various charities across Cornwall.
